On how to save one's soul. Building islands, blue dragons and cherries.

This is for MUSE – Blackout song.

I carried the little girl in my arms, towards the room that was now hers.
- I don’t want to go to bed, she pleaded. I don’t want to sleep. I am not tired.

- Babygirl … shhhhh. It’s ok, I’ll stay with you until you fall asleep.
The vivid dark eyes were wide open and her small body was shaking and trying to escape. Tears were starting to show up. I felt like I could hold her to me forever.
Take away all her fears with my stories. With the games we both made up for all the small chorus she could perform.

Her laughter filled my house, until the night fell. And then … always … it came to an end and she became more and more aware of the dreaded moment she would have to stay still.

- I’ll tell you more about the blue dragon, I smiled at her, while she continued squirming, but still gazing at me with hope.
- But I can’t see him now, there’s no blue outside anymore, she pouted.
- You can see him when you close your eyes, sweetie. You can see many, many things when you close your eyes.
- Really?
- Really.
- Really, really?
- You close your eyes and you’ll see for yourself.
- Nooooo. Mmmmm … I dont want to go in there, she whispered, gazing towards the door of the room.
- There are … too many people, and they won’t let me sleep.
- People, sweetie?
- Yes. They just stand there at first. And then they start laughing and laughing. And when I look at them, I can see they are crying on the inside. But they can’t stop laughing. They can’t stop … can’t … I can’t help them.
She was wailing.
I felt the anger flaring, and burning in my chest. I held her tight, that was all I could do.
She didn’t remember a thing. But when she took my hand and asked me if I am her daddy, she took hold of a long lost soul. I couldn’t lie to her, so I told her I didn’t remember either.
And until she’ll remember, I get the chance to build an island for her, made of stories, and days, and laughter, and dreams.
- Shhhhhhh. It’s ok. Everything will be alright. I’m here, sweetie.

I cradled and rocked the trembling and kicking body.
- You can sleep with me tonight. But you give me the start for a new story …
- I know, I know, she beamed, do you know who invented cherries? By the time she got to uttering “cherries” her voice was filled once again with curiousity.
- Uhm, let me think. Cherries … I don’t remember what those are …
- I know, I know, she squirmed to get down. And then ran to the kitchen, her voice fadding rapidly.
- Come on! I’ll show you!

===================

And looking through my notes, Breaking Benjamin – So cold was for a similar story … I’ll put it here until I write that one.

“Water!” fills my mind as I fly in the moisty sky, mouth gaped, breating in as much as I can. I flex a wing and feel the rotation drawing my body in. The little water specks hit my face and cling to my lashes. Clothes and wings dampening, I feel happy and fullfiled. A very good catch today. The big gray cloud would soon leave the teritory, but I linger inside it, enjoying it’s caressing fluffines.

A peak outside and off I am. No signs of archers today. The next cloud is pretty close and I jump in, then off to the next one, on and on for as long as I can. The gathered weight slows me down, but its vital for the clan’s life and I am the best gatherer in my family. I am the one taking risks, and I am rewarded accordingly. I got a new slave just the other day.

Wind blows stronger as I reach Ayl’s peak. I perch down and take in sight the rest of the way to the nest. I slide off and go high in the sky, finding the swift current. This part of the road stretching over the fields is the most dangerous, so I keep my eyes to the ground, glued to any movement. Humans are well known for their ability to disguise themselves as patches on the ground.

I reach the nest just as the sun hides behind the peaks I have left behind. Ayl’s is the highest, and unreachable by any other means except flight. It marks the center of our teritory, proud and harsh, as we are.

The guards salute as I enter, and slaves accompany me to the water room. They remove my wrappers and carefully put them on the grills that cover the ducts that go deep inside the nest. My wings release their weight to their skilled touch.

I stop them when they want to help me remove my gear. Today is my niece’s birthday. She is too young to fly out, but loves nothing more than hearing stories from me. I’ll let her dry my hair and tell her one more time her favourite story. Ayl and his magic wings. I’ll tell her about flying in the clouds. And watch her eyes closing as she’ll start dreaming of it, covered in her fluffy wings.

Today is indeed a good day.

As I lay under the tree, I see the kaleidoscope of sky through the ever changing leaves – each and every time a brach rustles or a leaf gleams in the sun. It stays with me even as I close my eyes, twitching without rest. The leaves play with the wind, turning their color from green to see-through gold, as to let the sun rays drop in the tall grass that surrounds me.
I feel like snapping at the yellow little flower that has nothing to do today, but to keep on landing on the tip of my nose. Fortunately for her, all of her many sisters make such a beautiful and seemingly forever stretching cover for the hills that meet the pure blue sky … the same color as the innocent eyes of a pup.
I stretch and roll and I love the smell of fresh torn grass and the deep musty smell of earth … until I feel my fur tangling itself with polen, yellow as well, like the eyes I look this world through. I would stay here until the moon calls me to start chasing her … in the quitenes of the night … never letting me reach her. That Cold Creature that would not come down from it’s starry cradle, no matter how long and eager I call for her.
Once I’m done smelling the yellowish flowers, I’ll sink in the darkness of the forest. I simply do not like running in the open field … its lack of obstacles makes me wary of it.
But on days like this, you just have to stop and fill yourself with colors … maybe even dream a little … eyes squinting sleepishly in the light. Light softened by the thousand of leaves. Eyes that see so well through the dark of the night. Unforgivingly gazing at the fires of humans.
I am hungry.
